Matthew 12:39-40 - But Jesus replied, "Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. (39)
For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. (40)
The question is, why did he tell them the only one sign that he will give them is the sign of Jonah.
Let's take a look into the story of Prophet Jonah, in the Bible there's a full chapter called Jonah which tells us the story. He is a prophet that was sent by God to preach his people of Nineveth to worship One True God, but Jonah did not have faith in his people and did not want to go their place. He decided to take a boat and leave his people and try to preach other people across the land to the west. While in the boat, a sudden terrifying storm came and the boat was shaking. Jonah said he will volunteer to jump. After he jumped to the sea in the middle of the ocean, God sent a big whale to swallow him, but he didn’t die, inside the whale he prayed to God to save him. His prayers came true, God saved him ad made the whale vomit out Jonah at land. Jonah felt sad and went back to his people he left. Let's get back to why Jesus said I will give them no sign but the sign of Prophet Jonah after the people asked for a sign, for Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for 3 days and 3 nights, so will the Son of Man in the heart of the earth for 3 days 3 night.
Was Jesus trying to tell us a message or a sign? Could it be that Jesus was alive during the time of Crucifixion? We also can see that Jonah was alive in the belly of the whale, according to the verse below

Based on the comparisons above, did Jesus gave us a sign and was trying to tell us something? If it's coming from Jesus it could only be the truth and why did he specifically gave the Sign of Jonah.
